SA Report: Three days, three paddles
Trip date: 9/6/2013
Launch: Public launch facility under southeastern end of Samoa Bridge.
Permit/Pass: None
Directions: From Highway 101 (Redwood Highway) in Eureka take R St. (Myrtle Ave.) north. Turn right (east) on 3rd St. then left (north) on T St. After a couple of blocks turn left on Waterfront Dr. then right into the launching area under the bridge. The ramp is next to the restroom building.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Rating: Moderate - Difficult (factors: wind)
Synopsis: This is a somewhat urban paddle, departing as it does from under a bridge in the town of Eureka. There are marsh areas, a marina, and easy access to very large and open Arcata Bay. Good for birding. Be aware of the possibility of strong winds. It was our intention to circumnavigate both Woodley and Indian Islands but heavy breezes forced cancellation of those plans.

-- Not a lot of advice to offer here - as our outing was less than successful - except to suggest that consideration of the conditions is crucial. What is the wind direction, tidal flow, how strong a paddler are you, and do you have enough time before the wind begins to freshen, are all questions to ask before launching.
Paddling into the lee of the marina significantly reduced the paddling difficulty, as also meandering through the marsh right next to the island did. The only local kayak shop (a sporting goods store with kayak rentals) was helpful with advice and directions, but time constrains governed our choices on this day.
We're looking forward to trying again someday.
