Directions: From Highway 395 on the northern end of Big Pine turn right onto CA 168 East. Follow this road as it twists and turns and ascends into the White Mountains. At about 13.5 miles you leave CA 168 (just before it turns east) and turn left onto White Mountain Rd. White Mountain Rd. continues north and resumes climbing. After another 7.3 miles you reach a sharp turn in the road where there is a turnout on the left with some parking. This is the viewpoint area.

Synopsis: This is a viewpoint worthy of the name and well worth the stop. From this spot you can see the long line of Eastern Sierra peaks ranging from as far north to as far south as the air quality will allow. There are some exhibits a few feet down the walkway that name the peaks and glaciers spread out before you.

Sierra Viewpoint - Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest

Turn by Turn:

  -- A sidewalk drops you down from the parking area to the exhibits. From here a gravel path heads directly south and then climbs out onto a knoll. There is a small loop here so take either fork after the split.
