Sinkhole (P.O.I.)

Trip Date: 9/12/2015

Location: Russian Gulch State Park

Permit/Pass: Free for day use

Trail maps: parks.ca Brochure

Directions: From the junction of California Highway 20 and Highway 1 in Fort Bragg drive 6.2 miles south to a right turn onto Brest Rd. An immediate left brings you to the kiosk for entrance to the park. Continue on Point Cabrillo Dr., then take the right turn out to the headlands parking area.

Synopsis: There are a few sinkholes (or blowholes) in this area. They are essentially places where the ocean has penetrated under the cliffs and the ground has fallen in above. This one is interesting and good size, and the deep coves and bluffs just a minimal numbers of steps away on the headlands trails are quite beautiful.

Trail sequence: Headlands trails / Sinkhole / headlands trails

Type: Loop

Distance: 0.7 miles

Rating: Easy

Notes: Not much in the way of trail names here, but most of this short walk is within sight of the parking area, and you can only go so far west, so there's little chance of getting lost.

Sinkhole - Russian Gulch State Park

Turn by Turn:

-- On the west side of the parking area there is a not-very-prominent trailhead for the Sinkhole hike. Take this trail and head the hundred yards or so over to the destination.

-- From the east side of the Sinkhole continue on over to the headlands trail on one of a number of use trails. I headed west and north out onto a point, then worked my way back over to the north side of the Sinkhole.

-- Circle around the Sinkhole and take one of the use trails south to pick up the headlands trail again. Follow this path as it winds around back to the northeast and eventually returns to the parking area.
