Trip Date: 9/18/2015
Location: Joshua Tree National Park
Permit/Pass: 7 Day Permit ($15), JT Annual Pass ($30) or National Parks Pass
Maps: NPS Joshua Tree, NPS Simplified Map
Directions: On California Highway 62 (Twentynine Palms Highway) in Yucca Valley drive east about 20 miles to the city of Twentynine Palms where you'll take a right turn on Canyon Rd. Drive directly south for about a mile, then veer southeast onto 49 Palms Canyon Rd. Follow to the parking area for 49 Palms Oasis trail. The trailhead is at the southern end of the lot.
Synopsis: The geology along this trail is fascinating. The rocks would make for a great hike all by themselves. But of course there is a lovely oasis on the other side of the hill that provides some cool shade as well as a restful spot for a break and/or lunch. Keep your eyes open for interesting lizards, and as always in Joshua Tree, make sure you have enough water.
Trail sequence: 49 Palms Oasis trail
Type: Out and back
Distance: 3.2 miles
Elevation: Min. - 2669’, Max. - 3040'
Profile:
Rating: Moderate (factors: heat)
Notes: Unlike most hikes, this one requires that you climb and descend the same hill on the way out as well as on the return trip. It's not a butt-kicker, but it's something to be aware of in this relatively warmer region of Joshua Tree.
Track: 49 Pams Oasis - Joshua Tree National Park
Turn by turn:
-- Head south from the parking area as the trail climbs gently over rocky steps and sandy terrain. There are no junctions along this trail (except for the odd spur trail to a viewpoint) so as long as you keep close track of the sometime indistinct trail you stand little chance of getting off course.
-- The path circles to the east and ascends gradually, offering nice views of the town of Twentynine Palms and desert to the north. As you crest the hill you turn back to the south, then to the west as you begin descending.
-- As the trail once again straightens out and heads south, you enter some rocky areas where the route is not so well-defined as to be obvious on the way back. Take note of conditions and trailside landmarks along here so the return trip won't get confusing.
-- The oasis, which has been in sight since cresting the hill, loom closer now as the path once again veers eastward. Upon reaching the palms, it becomes clear that people have created use trails all over the area. Please try to respect the park's rules and remain on the established trail.
-- Retrace your steps to the parking area.
